Vincent M. Martin, age 82, of Birchwood, WI died Sunday, October 11, 2009 at the Rice Lake Convalescent Center.
He was born January 15, 1927 to James and Edith (Houin) Martin at Plymouth, IN and with his parents he moved to Chicago, IL where he attended school. They moved to Edgewater in 1941. He served in the US Army during World War II and after receiving an Honorable Discharge he returned to Chicago to complete his education. He then returned to the Town of Edgewater where he and his father started a sawmill business cutting railroad ties and later cutting dimension maple lumber and dry kiln it for manufacturing businesses. In 1978 he and his brother made the transition from the lumber business to steel sales and fabrication. He loved to travel and explore large hydraulic dams as well as talk politics along the way. Vincent was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Mikana VFW.
Vincent Martin is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Patrick & Ann Martin of Birchwood, WI; a nephew, Benjamin Martin and 2 nieces, Dr. Joann Fouts and Rose Roeder; and a grandniece and 4 grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Edith Martin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, October 24, 2009 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Birchwood, WI, Fr. George Votruba officiating, with interment in the Woodlawn Cemetery where Military Rites will be accorded by the Birchwood American Legion. Friends may call from 4 - 7 PM Friday at Appleyard's Home for Funerals and for 1 hour prior to the funeral at the Church.
